The University of Michigan is studying how daily experiences and sleep patterns affect well-being and brain health in couples where one partner has dementia symptoms, with or without a diagnosis. This research seeks to determine better ways to support these couples.

Most participation will occur via phone and video, with the option to complete
cognitive assessment visits either over a video call or in person in Ann Arbor, MI at
the start and at one- and two-year follow ups. Couples aged 60+ are invited to join this study and help us learn more about supporting couples living with dementia.

Additional Information

This study is being done to better understand how daily experiences and sleep patterns affect well-being and brain health in couples living with dementia. Through this study, researchers will learn more about better ways to support these couples.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Couples ages 60+
  • Living with your partner
  • Your or your partner have symptoms of dementia
  • Lives in the Eastern Time Zone within the United States

If you or someone you know participates in this study, here is what you can expect:

  1. Initial Phone Interview: Both partners will complete a 60-minute phone interview. This interview will be repeated one and two years later.

  2. Cognitive Assessment: Each partner will complete a 60-minute cognitive assessment (video call or in person), which will also be repeated one and two years later.

  3. Study Procedures Review: After the initial interview, both partners will have a brief phone or video call to review the study procedures.

  4. 7-Day Smartphone Survey & Wrist Monitor: For seven consecutive days after the initial interview, both partners will complete five short smartphone surveys each day and wear a wrist activity monitor (similar to a watch).

  5. Check-In Calls: Two brief check-in calls will take place at 6 months and 18 months after the initial interview.

Phone interviews and cognitive assessments may take place on different days for each partner, but the smartphone surveys and wrist activity monitor must be completed on the same
days for both partners. If you are unable to complete an interview or assessment, you can schedule another time to finish. All interviews, in-person cognitive assessments and check in
calls will be audio recorded, which is a required part of the study. Video call cognitive assessments will be video recorded, which is a required part of the study.

Each participant will receive up to $370 ($740 per couple) for participating in this study. Checks will be distributed as couples complete each portion of the study.

The only cost to you is the cost of travel to Ann Arbor, MI if you are completing an in person cognitive assessment with our team. If you have any concerns regarding your ability to attend
your cognitive assessment appointment, you may contact the study team to request travel assistance.
