Study Background
Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC), Therapy in Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and kills the cells that release insulin. Little or no insulin is released into the body in Type 1 diabetes (T1D), so sugar builds up in the blood instead of being used for energy. Current therapy for T1D is one or more daily insulin injections.
The purpose of this study is to determine if Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC), improve new onset T1D and determine if they are safe. We want to find out whether receiving an infusion of stem cells, in addition to standard insulin injections, improves outcomes for T1D. Advance research today and join our compensated study!

Additional Information
The goal of this study is to determine if patients receiving an MSC infusion in addition to the standard of care for diabetes have slower disease progression than patients receiving placebo infusion. A placebo has no therapeutic effect and is used as a basis for comparison in testing new methods of therapy.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes within the past 6 months
- Currently taking insulin
- Ages 18-40
- Not currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant in the near future
- Able to attend 7 in-person study visits at The Medical University of South Carolina
Once enrolled, this study involves 7 in-person visits and 1 follow-up phone call. Some participants will receive an infusion of stem cells, while other participants will receive a placebo. All participants will continue their regular insulin therapy throughout the study.
Compensation is provided for your participation.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
