Study Background

Help us learn more about the strengths and challenges that your family experiences.

This study is designed to better understand how everyday stress and other experiences affect the well-being of families in Appalachian Ohio. The study involves a series of surveys, all completed online using a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

There are no in-person visits!

Parents or a primary caregiver will complete all the surveys. We will also ask about a child in your household who is in elementary school (including pre-K if it’s part of an elementary school). Questions may be about you, your household, all of your children, or this specific child.

Additional Information

The goal of this study is to better understand everyday life for families with young children in Appalachian Ohio, including both the challenges they face and the strengths that help them manage day-to-day demands.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

  • You are the primary caregiver of a child in elementary school (Pre-K to 5th grade)
  • You live in Appalachian Ohio
  • You have had times where resources, such as money or groceries, felt stretched
  • You have access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet
  • You are fluent in English

Everything in this study is done online.

1. Getting Started
First, you will go through a series of online surveys where you will review the study information and agree to take part. Then, you’ll complete a brief training that explains how the study works and what will be asked of you as a participant. After that, you’ll take a one-time survey (about 45 minutes) that asks about a wide range of topics regarding you and your experiences.

2. Daily Surveys
After you finish the initial survey, you will shortly begin 30 days of daily surveys. You will receive a link each evening at 8pm by text message or email (your choice). These daily surveys are shorter (about 5 to 10 minutes) and ask about what you experienced on that day. For example, they include questions about your sleep, mood, work, daily activities, parenting experiences, and how your child is doing.

3. Final Survey
After the 30 days of daily surveys, you will complete one final survey (about 30 minutes), similar to the survey at the outset of the study, to see what may have changed over time.

Some participants may also be invited to take part again during the summer.

Participating families can earn up to $100. (Additional compensation is provided for those who additionally join the summer study.)

There is no cost for your family to participate in our research study.
