Study Background

Researchers at the University of Utah are conducting a study on tobacco and regular alcohol use in Utah, Montana, Nevada, Idaho, and Wyoming.

In this study, we want to examine how daily experiences affect people’s use of tobacco and alcohol. For example, we will try to understand how stress and feelings of happiness are related to people’s decisions to drink and smoke.

We’ll use an app that is downloaded onto participants’ smartphones to send surveys throughout the study. Participants will complete one baseline virtual visit and one visit over the phone.

Study Background

Researchers at the University of Utah are conducting a study on tobacco and alcohol use in Utah, Montana, Nevada, Idaho, and Wyoming.

In this study, we want to examine how negative daily experiences affect people’s use of tobacco and alcohol. We also want to find out whether resilience, like mindfulness and social support, makes a difference to that effect.

We’ll use mHealth (mobile health) to conduct surveys throughout the study. Participants will complete one baseline visit in person and one visit over the phone.

Eventually, the findings of this study might be useful to help people who want to change their relationship with tobacco and alcohol.

Additional Information

The major goals of this project are to examine:

1) The association of negative experiences with drivers of tobacco/alcohol use

2) Whether resilience (e.g., mindfulness, social support) protects against the harmful effect of negative experiences of tobacco/alcohol use.
