Study Background

Researchers at the University of California San Francisco are looking for smokers to participate in a study observing the effects of smoking and vaping THC compared to smoking cigarettes.

Findings from this study will determine differences in THC exposure and cardiovascular effects from smoking and vaping dry herb cannabis. Additionally, this study will examine the differences between smoking cannabis and smoking tobacco cigarettes.

Participants will attend 6 study visits where they will be randomized to one of the following groups: smoking tobacco cigarettes, smoking cannabis (joints), or vaping dry-herb cannabis.

Study Background

Additional Information

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the differences between smoking and vaping dry-herb cannabis, and the differences between smoking cannabis and smoking tobacco cigarettes.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 21-70
  • Current regular user of cannabis who smokes cannabis in any form, including joints, pipes, and blunt at least once a week for the past 3 months
  • History of cannabis vaporizer use or willingness to use the vaporizer in the study
  • Test positive for D-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) at screening and self-report of cannabis use
  • Current tobacco cigarette use who smokes ≥3 cigarettes per day

 

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Unstable medical conditions, such as:

    • Heart disease
    • Seizures
    • Cancer
    • Thyroid disease (okay if controlled with medication)
    • Diabetes
    • Hepatitis B or C or Liver disease
    • Glaucoma
    • Kidney disease or urinary retention
    • An ulcer in the past year
    • Active use of an inhaler for asthma or COPD
    • Hypertension if uncontrolled (meaning participant has a diagnosis, but they are not taking medication/under treatment (e.g., diet or exercise plan)

Once enrolled, the study involves:

  • One screening visit
  • One orientation visit
  • 6 outpatient hospital visits (2 days back-to-back), 3 weeks in a row
    • During those weeks, the participant will be randomized to one of the following
      • smoking tobacco cigarettes
      • smoking cannabis (joints)
      • vaping dry-herb cannabis.

Compensation is provided up to $2,150 for your participation.
