Online Paid Research Study
for Men in USMC

Researchers at Georgia State University know that alcohol use and peer interactions can shape social behavior, but less is understood about how friends influence each other in real-life drinking situations among men in the U.S. Marine Corps. This topic matters because social dynamics can affect decision-making and well-being. This study will examine how alcohol use, entertainment preferences, and peer interactions work together in everyday settings, aiming to better understand how these factors influence behavior.

Additional Information

This study is being conducted to better understand how alcohol use, entertainment preferences, and social interactions influence behavior among men in the U.S. Marine Corps, and to explore ways to improve overall well-being and social outcomes.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Active-duty men in the U.S. Marines
  • Drink alcohol
  • A male friend in the USMC who is also willing to participate

Overall Duration
The study lasts about 2 weeks.

Study Activities (All Online/Remote)
All parts of this study are completed online. Participants will:

  • Orientation Session (about 30 minutes):
Meet with a member of the research team online, review the study, give consent, and complete a survey about alcohol use, entertainment preferences, and social behavior. You will also learn how to use a mobile app for daily surveys.
  • Daily Surveys (about 5 minutes each, twice a day for 14 days):
Complete short surveys each morning and evening using a mobile app (about 10 minutes total per day). These surveys will ask about your daily activities, alcohol use, and social interactions.
  • Drink Reports (as needed):
When you have your first drink, you will start a quick report in the app. The app will then send two short follow-up surveys later that same day.
  • Paired Participation:
You and a male friend (who is also in the USMC and joins the study) will complete the daily surveys during the same 2-week period. At times, you may be asked questions about your friend’s behavior if you are together.
  • Online Activity with Your Friend (about 1 session):
You and your friend will complete an online activity together where you make choices and discuss preferences. This session may be recorded (audio/text) for research purposes.

Data Collection & Privacy
The study collects survey responses and app-based entries. Conversations during the online activity may be recorded for research. No in-person visits are required, and participation is fully remote
