Researchers at New York University School of Medicine are conducting a study on integrating financial coaching with smoking cessation support for NYC adults who smoke 5 or more cigarettes daily and have a low income.

This study is testing whether combining financial coaching with smoking cessation counseling helps people quit more effectively than smoking cessation counseling alone.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Smoke at least 5 cigarettes per day
- NYC resident (any of the 5 boroughs)
- Ages 18+
- Self-reported income below 200% of the federal poverty level
- Interested in working with a counselor to help you quit smoking
- Speak English or Spanish
- Interested in working with a financial coach
Exclusion Criteria:
- Known allergy to nicotine replacement therapy
- Heart attack in the past 2 months
- Diagnosed with underlying arrhythmia or ongoing/worsening angina
- Have a legal representative who manages your money
Overall Duration
- This study involves 8 visits over about 12 months, including a 6-month and 12-month follow-up survey.
Counseling & Support
- A baseline survey, then random assignment to either standard smoking cessation counseling or counseling plus financial coaching.
- 5 one-on-one counseling sessions with a licensed counselor over 2-3 months.
- 8 weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy (gum, lozenges, or patches) to support your quit attempt.
Follow-Up
- A 6-month follow-up survey by phone.
- A 12-month follow-up survey by phone to complete the study.
Participants may receive $25 VISA gift cards for completing each of 3 surveys (up to $75 total), plus 8 weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy and free one-on-one counseling.
