Study Background
Take control of your health and your money, get free, one-on-one support to quit smoking and improve your finances.
If you live in New York City, smoke at least 5 cigarettes a day, and are ready to quit, you may be eligible to take part in a research study offering free, personalized counseling from smoking cessation and financial professionals. This study is designed to help people quit smoking while also learning how to manage their money more effectively—because both your health and your financial goals matter.
As a participant, you’ll receive eight weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy (gum, patches, or lozenges) and individualized quit plans from licensed counselors. You may also work with a financial counselor to set goals, understand spending habits, and make your money go further—especially as you cut back or quit smoking. You’ll be compensated for your time, with up to $75 in VISA gift cards just for completing surveys.

Participant Testimonials
“My counselor helped me with knowing how much money that I could save when I stopped smoking, how much it costs me when I buy all those cigarettes. That was helpful because I can use that for other things.”
“The financial goals were helpful. It was pretty motivational to write them down. It gave me an added idea on what would I do with this extra money if I didn’t smoke”
“I’m glad I had the quit smoking guidelines. It was very helpful. I taped them to my refrigerator and put it on my door to remind me. ‘You’re going out, do what you got to do, but don’t get no cigarettes.'”
“The counseling is 1-on-1 and there’s somebody taking their time to see you for this space of time and talk about what leads you to smoking, your drawbacks. What would you like to do better if you quit smoking? What can you use? And it gives you all these resources that can help you in ways you thought that you didn’t need help. It helped me a lot.”
